Canada is the Greatest Country in the World
July 1, 2017
Canada is the greatest country in the world and 2017 gives us much to celebrate. This year, our true north, strong and free, celebrates its 150th anniversary, and Saskatchewan’s contribution to our country has been immense. On this July 1st, Saskatchewanians have much to be proud of.
Saskatchewan gave Canada our 13th Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, whose accomplishments in office are hallmarks of Canadian history. Our Prime Minister from Saskatchewan was the one who gave Canada our first Bill of Rights and our indigenous peoples the right to vote. He was also the Prime Minister who appointed the first woman to federal Cabinet. This same woman, Ellen Fairclough, was also Canada’s first female Acting Prime Minister.
Our province also has a proud history of defending our land, sending many brave men and women in uniform to serve during the Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Afghan War, and to numerous peacekeeping missions. Our Saskatchewanian sons and daughters continue to serve with distinction in the Canadian Armed Forces, and we are grateful for their service.
As Canada’s breadbasket, Saskatchewan feeds our country and the world. Did you know that 47% of Canada’s field crops are grown in our province? Our canola, wheat and lentils in particular are known worldwide. From grains to pulses, cattle to dairy, Saskatchewanian agri-food is simply the best.
Saskatchewanians and their families have a lot to be thankful for this Canada Day – the Canadian values of democracy and respect and hard work are held dear in our province. On this 150th anniversary of our Canada’s Confederation, we have reason to be proud of our contributions to our country’s society and economy. Canada is a sum of all her parts and our continuing Confederation is the lasting legacy of those who came before us to make Canada an even better place from generation to generation.
Let us continue that work for our children and as a light of democracy and freedom for the entire world.
From my family to yours, I wish you a happy Canada Day!
